Taos
Taos offers everything from moderate to difficult trails, and all of them have their own distinctive character! Divisadero Loop makes for a great early hike before the heat of the day, offering high altitude views of the valley and 70 mile western vistas; South Boundary Trail, originally a sheep trail, is a shuttle-type, downhill walk though fir forests deep into Taos Canyon. Italianos Canyon, near the Taos Ski Valley, is rated as difficult, and the easy to moderate Williams Lake Trail delivers you to the base of Wheeler Peak. As with all hikes in the area, be prepared for sudden weather changes and carry plenty of water. For more recommendations and information, contact the U.S. Forest Service at their local Taos office.
Red River
Red River is surrounded by 138 miles of marked hiking trails. Marked hikes range from short nature trails along the Red River to day trips through the Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area.
- Short hikes: Red River Nature Trail, Middle Fork Lake, Pioneer Trail, Mallette Park Nature Trail
- Long hikes: Goose Creek Canyon, Columbine, Lost Lake, Horseshoe Lake, Wheeler Peak
Questa
Cabresto Canyon offers excellent opportunities for canoes and kayaks, hiking, picnicking, camping and horseback riding into the high country.
The Wild River Recreation Area provides opportunities for hiking, cycling, camping, picnicking, and fishing along a 13-mile loop. Access is available along this loop for hikes down to the Rio Grande. The U.S. Government Bureau of Land Management manages this spectacular area. More information can be obtained from its office in Taos, NM.
Columbine Canyon is just a short drive east of Questa on State Hwy 38. The hiking trail that begins at Columbine Campground, is a lovely shaded trail that runs beside Columbine Creek. There is an abundance of wildflowers that grace the trail, especially the beautiful Columbine for which the canyon was named. Wild roses abound, mint grows along the stream, and if you are there at just the right time, you may enjoy the delicious wild strawberries and raspberries that grow close to the trail.
Angel Fire
Angel Fire recreation trails are open four seasons to hiking, biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The trails are maintained by the Trekkers, kept free of hazards, and are well marked using signs, cairns, and diamond markers. Posts and mileage from trailhead have been added every 1.4 mile on all trails.
Angel Fire Trailheads: Bobcat, Solar Loop, Sendero del Sol, Deer Elk Bear, Coyote, Oeste Vista, Lake and Lady Slipper. Angel Fire also has entrances to the Elliot Barker trails.
