FISHING

Eagle Nest
Eagle Nest Lake – This 2,200 acre lake boasts some of the finest trophy fishing for Rainbow and Kokanee salmon in the Southwest. The State Game and Fish Department regularly stocks Eagle Nest Lake with trout, salmon and Snake River Cutthroat. Anglers can fish from the banks or by boat (boat rentals available) and ice fish in the winter. Ice fishing usually begins in January and the first open water fishing usually starts in April.  Stream fishing in nearby Cimarron Canyon State Park also offers a worthwhile challenge to fly and bait anglers.

Questa
Cabresto Lake is located off a well-maintained dirt road that connects Red River and Questa. The waters are filled with delicious brook trout, and anglers love the challenges they provide. In winter, the frozen lake can be reached by snowmobile, and the vistas are spectacular.

The Wild River Recreation Area provides great fishing opportunities along a 13-mile loop.  Access is available along this loop for hikes down to the Rio Grande.  The U.S. Government Bureau of Land Management manages this spectacular area. More information can be obtained from its office in Taos, NM.

Angel Fire
This alpine village offers fishing at a private stocked fishing lake.  There are picnic tables and barbeque grills available.  There are also row boats, canoes and paddle boats available for rent.

Taos
Taos' streams are stocked frequently with rainbow trout from the nearby Red River Fish Hatchery, making our mountain stream fishing challenging and a great close-in getaway.  Wet a line in the Rio Hondo in Hondo Canyon below the Taos Ski Valley, or in the mighty Rio Grande in the areas to the north and south of Pilar in the heart of the Gorge Canyon off NM Highway 68 south of Taos.  Stop at the Pilar Visitor Center for advice on the best spots for casting.  Taos also features several well-known outfitters for a guided fly-fishing experience.

Red River
The Red River is stocked with more trout annually than any other public river in the country.  Multiple public ponds in town are also stocked weekly, including our free children's pond.  Local outfitters can help you find a trophy fish just waiting to be hooked, and get you set up with one of our many fly fishing guides.
