Angel Fire
The Moreno Valley
has two nearby state parks as well as private and pubic RV parks. North of Angel Fire is the Cimarron Canyon State Park, which offers trout fishing and wildlife is abundant. Hikers and anglers can enjoy the park's eight mile section of Cimarron Canyon, known for its towing rock cliffs called the Palisades. South of Angel Fire is the Coyote Creek State Park, which offers solitude, scenery and some of the best mountain trout fishing in New Mexico await visitors at the park. This park sits in the eastern foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It is a great place to camp, fish and hike.
Questa
Cabresto Canyon offers excellent opportunities for canoes and kayaks, hiking, picnicking, camping and horseback riding into the high country.
The Wild River Recreation Area provides opportunities for hiking, cycling, camping, picnicking, and fishing along a 13-mile loop. Access is available along this loop for hikes down to the Rio Grande. The U.S. Government Bureau of Land Management manages this spectacular area. More information can be obtained from its office in Taos, NM.
Columbine Canyon is just a short drive east of Questa on State Hwy 38. The hiking trail that begins at Columbine Campground, is a lovely shaded trail that runs beside Columbine Creek. There is an abundance of wildflowers that grace the trail, especially the beautiful Columbine for which the canyon was named. Wild roses abound, mint grows along the stream, and if you are there at just the right time, you may enjoy the delicious wild strawberries and raspberries that grow close to the trail.
Eagle Nest
Eagle Nest is the Gateway to the enchanted circle, with over 250 camp sites in and around town. It is centrally located between and bordering both Cimarron Canyon and Eagle Nest Lake State Parks. A short drive to both Angel Fire and Red River, Eagle Nest provides a selection from the most primitive dry camping in the wilderness or on the river, to the resort style campgrounds with planed activities and food services. Several private campgrounds offer 30 to 50 amp pull-throughs with full hookup, and shower facilities. Eagle Nest is truly the Campground mecca of the area. The small community, restaurants, shops, and local hospitality accentuates the great outdoor experience.
Taos
Taos offers a host of improved and unimproved camping areas near town as well as three public RV parks. Campers will find 4 improved campgrounds in Taos Canyon -- Capulin, El Nogal, La Sombra and Las Petacas -- all concession operated with no utilities. En route to the Taos Ski Valley, campers will find more primitive roadside camping, including Lower Hondo, Cuchilla del Medio, Twining and Upper Cuchilla along the Rio Hondo River. The first three permit trailers to 16', the latter offers tent camping only. To the south off Highway 518 lie the largest and most improved camping areas: Comales and Agua Piedra. Flechado is a small tent only campground. All are excellent choices for hiking, fishing, or just a great place to stop for a picnic.
Red River
The town of Red River
is located in the heart of the Carson National Forest with many camping sites to choose from. Camp at a nearby Forest Service Campground, one of Red River's three RV parks, or hike to your own private destination.
