Taos Ski Valley
You'll want to include a visit to Taos Ski Valley in summer, where they offer everything from a roster of special events like Taos School of Music Seminar Series to the Taos Opera Institute and Jillana School of Ballet. But if you went to be active, how about the Frazer Mountain Madness Mountain Bike Race each July or the Up and Over Trail Run in August? And all these can be enjoyed in tandem with a ride up the Chair Lift for a breathtaking view of the valley below and Wheeler Peak beyond. Mountain wildflowers, mule deer and the occasional eagle soaring the thermals add to the ride, which is open May 24-Sept 3 from Thursday through Monday, then Saturdays and Sundays from Sept 8-30. Hours are 10 am to 4:30 pm and tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for juniors.
The Red River Ski Area offers scenic chair lift rides each summer, generally from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the 30 minute ride up the mountain, plan lunch at The Tip Restaurant, hike around the multitude of trails, and enjoy the sun and scenery. Ticket prices vary - call (575) 754-2223 for details.
Take a ride on the Chile Express at the Angel Fire Resort. This ride provides incredible views of the Moreno Valley. Angel Fire Resort runs the “Chile Express” during the summer months through early fall. The high-speed quad will take hikers, sight-seers and mountain bikers to the summit. You can then hike or bike down the ski trails. Of course, you can also enjoy riding back down on the quad. The views are fabulous.
